The Idea
When it was reported that the Spanish authorities had decided to ban the Estelada during the Copa Del Rey cup final at the Vicente Calderon Stadium in Madrid, social media sites, most notably in Scotland, were buzzing with excitement, especially after Catalan nationalists revealed plans to distribute thousands of Saltires outside the stadium instead. After researching the design of the Estelada, particularly how the Catalans had borrowed elements of design from the flags of Cuba and Puerto Rico, it seemed curious that Scotland had not done something similar to create a flag showing support for independence. Wouldn't it be so much better if the Catalans had been able to fly a Scottish flag which shared elements and ideals with their own? It was at this moment that the idea of a "Scottish Estelada" was born - we already had a triangle at the side of the Scottish saltire, all we needed was a star...
