The Star
The star in the proposed design is intended as a symbol of national sovereignty, as a sign of intent to leave the UK and as a guiding light towards a new independent future for Scotland.
There are numerous examples of the use of stars in flags to signify individual states: The European Union, The United States of America, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Catalonia…etc. however, probably the most appropriate use of the star in a flag where parallels can be drawn to its use here is “The Bonnie Blue Flag” - historically flown by some U.S. states to demonstrate a resolve to secede the federal union. The star has long been used in the flags of North American states and countries to signify statehood, most notably in the Cuban struggle for independence from Spain in the 19th century. Many separatists from countries seeking independence, including Puerto Rico and Catalonia, have since borrowed elements of the Cuban flag including the star, for their flags to display their desire for national sovereignty and it is with this in mind that adding the "Lone Star" or the “Star of Independence” (preferred) to the Scottish saltire is proposed. |
